Some teeth can have a crack that is too small to show up on an x-ray.  A crack can even be under the gums.  These cracks are known as “cracked tooth syndrome.”  It is most common in the lower back teeth, molars.  These teeth take the brunt of the forces of chewing, therefor are much more susceptible.  AZ Dentist Queen Creek AZ

A person who grinds or clenches their teeth are more likely to have cracked tooth syndrome.  Even a way a person’s teeth come together can put too much pressure on one tooth, and this can cause the teeth to crack. #martindental

If a tooth has a large fillings in it, it is more likely to crack.  If a tooth has undergone root canal treatment it will be weaker than the other teeth and can be more likely to crack.  If a person has one cracked tooth they are much more likely to have others.  This can happen at the same time or in the near future.  AZ Dentist Queen Creek AZ

Symptoms of cracked tooth syndrome can vary, but there are some symptoms that stay pretty consistent.  A tooth can hurt when you bite or chew.  Sensitivity will be mild or intense and it can last briefly or for a long time. Sometimes the pain only happens when you eat certain foods or if you bite in a specific way.  You may not feel a constant ache that you will with a cavity or abscess.  The tooth will most likely be sensitive to cold temperatures.

If the crack expands, a piece of the tooth may break off.  Infections can occur as well.  This can appear in the gum around the fractured tooth.  If you notice a pimple-like bump on the gum, near the tooth, this is a fistula. #sweetwaterdentist

Many who experience cracked tooth syndrome will have symptoms for months.  It is one of the most difficult dental problems to diagnose because the pain is not predictable.
